Time

The most precious commodity

any of us have is time.

Once it’s gone, it’s gone

and there’s no getting it back.

It’s not only “OK” to be

possessive of your time,

it’s essential.

It’s the one unrecoverable,

nonrenewable commodity.

You can always make more money.

Time spent is time gone though,

and it’s important that you spend it

on what you want to spend it on,

because it is

the Unrepayable Debt.

Good, Fast, Cheap…

I think it’s time to apply the classic development trilogy to all the projects that other people want me to do for them. i.e. How do you want it done, good, fast or cheap? You can pick any two out of three.

I appreciate that different people have different skill sets, and I’m flattered that people think enough of some of mine that they want/need my help or advice at times, but also there comes a point when I’ve got to draw a line under it as I’m spending way too much time and energy on sorting out *other peoples stuff* and not enough time on my own projects so I figure I’ve simply got to switch those priorities around.

So, if you want a free ‘time-for-print’ photoshoot? Cool, but I won’t get around to sorting the photos until I’ve got time, and I’ll get the prints done when I next order some for a paying job. If you want to pay for my time then great, you’ll get them back asap.

Don’t ever expect me to do your photos for free. And yes, that is how much I charge for prints, I know you can get them printed for 20p each in Tesco, that’s irrelevant. You’re not paying the cost of the printing, your paying for the fact I spent five grand on camera gear and learned how to use it.

You need help with your website? Why is that, oh yeah, it’s because IT’S NOT EASY. The reason I can do it is because I spent years learning how. That cost me real money and thousands of hours of my time. Perhaps you’d like to do your job for nothing too?

Yes I am having a rant because I’ve definitely reached saturation point with sorting out other people’s lives for them. For fuck’s sake, man up and take some responsibility for yourselves for a change.

Saturation point..

Hmm.. time for a purge I think.

I realise that I’m probably feeling a little extra snarky due to the natural anti-climax that always happens after a holiday, but I do seem to have reached saturation point again, and really I’m getting pretty fed up with the number of people who call themselves ‘friends’ yet who I only ever seem to hear from them when they want something.

You know, just once in a while it would be nice if someone else made an effort for a change?

I’m really going to have to start asking myself ‘what’s in it for me?’ a bit more often and if I really can’t find a compelling answer there then I think it’s time to re-evaluate some of those relationships. Again.

Makes it all worthwhile :)

Had a lovely photo/card this morning in the post from my friend Leigh in the states. He’s a very successful multi-school owner and entrepreneur who having achieved amazing success through the martial arts is now focusing his efforts on helping others. Part of that includes an orphanage which Leigh set up in the Philippines and which I’ve been sponsoring.

Here’s the photo I got this morning:

Which came with a note:

“Hello Master Olpin,

My name is Rhina and I am 8 years old.

I just wanted to thank your for being my sponsor.

I want you to know that because of you my life is better.

I hope that someday you can some and see me here in the Philippines, so you can see just how much your sponsorship is helping me.

I will be sending you another message very soon.

Thank you, God bless you and I hope you have a nice day.

Rhina xxx”

Bless her. That proper made my day that did..
